A Free Way to Repair EDB files - Eseutil & Isinteg Utility

Exchange Server is the most popular server used by large scale organizations. It stores data in the EDB file format, also known as Exchange Database. EDB Database files save emails, calendars, notes, tasks, messages, journals, et cetera. Sometimes due to virus attack, jet engine error, internal error, and installing a corrupt program in the computer cause the EDB files corruption. There are two methods to repair corrupt EDB files, one is a manual method Eseutil & Isinteg, and the other is using the Third-party tool.

Before using the Eseutil & Isinteg utility, you need to perform some actions which are given below:

Log in as an Exchange Server administrator.
Take a backup of the current EDB database and save the file in a safe location. This backup will help in recovering, in case the actual database file gets corrupted while repairing it with Eseutil & Isinteg utility.
Move/delete unnecessary folders as well as files, and make sure you have the space of at least 20 to 30% of the storage space, repaired database obtains up to 20% storage space.
If you don’t have that much free space on the drive where database files are, then the command-line should include a command to redirect the repaired exchange database files into a different drive.
You can check the total free space in your disk by searching your application log for event ID 1221.

Repair EDB files using Eseutil & Isinteg utility:

Pursue the following steps to repair corrupt EDB files using Eseutil & Isinteg utility

Go to the start button and make a click on Run.
A dialog box will appear to enter cmd in the box and hit OK.
Now go to C:/Program Files/Exchange Server/bin.
Now type Eseutil.Exe in the command line.
Eseutil.Exe works in two modes i.e., “/r” and “/p” (Eseutil/r for soft recovery).
Use Eseutil/p if the database is severely damaged or inaccessible.
Esetuil/p C:/Program files/Exchsvr/mdbdata/primaryname.EDB.
After restoring the damaged EDB database using Eseutil/p command, now run Eseutil/d command line to defragment Exchange Database.
Now, run an Esetuil.Exe to check the integrity of the repaired EDB database. It will show as Isinteg – s {Exchange Server name} – fix test all tests. Choose a recovered EDB file from Exchange Server.
After that, run the Esetuil.Exe until it doesn’t show any error in the Exchange server.
Now run Eseutil/G command to recheck the accuracy of the repaired EDB database.
Mount the EDB database again by using administrator utility of Exchange Server.

The manual method to repair corrupt EDB files is full of complexity, and it is not a recommended way to repair inaccessible EDB files. One should technically sound to pursue the manual method for recovery. A single wrong command can lead you to lose your valuable data. The user cannot repair jet engine error or software faulty corruption using Eseutil & Isinteg utility. So, avoid the risk of data loss and fix all types of issues users have to choose a third-party tool.
